Corn Maze & Pick Your Own Pumpkins

Although winter is upon us there is still plenty of work to do on a daily basis on the farm.

Feeding cattle, adding layers of bedding to the barn for comfort of the animals, checking to be sure waterers are running. Checking the herd for winter health management. Feeding ponies and chickens. General checks of everything every day.

Find us every Saturday at the Amherst indoor winter farmers market. Located at the Middle School on HIgh St. from 10:00-2:00.

The farm store is open daily but is best to called ahead before going to the farm. 413-668-6843

     Continuing Education

Michael Austin  ( herd manager ) and Jim Austin ( son) recently attended the Graham School for Cattlemen in Kanas. While at the Graham School they had the opportunity to have classroom and hands on involvement with herd management. During class time  they discussed diagnosing pregnancy, artifical insemination, calf delivery and herd management.

Through open discussion they learned reproductive anatomy, locating the reproductive organs,  stages of pregnancy and live animal evaluation. Progressing through the week with hands on clinics they were given information on nutritional cycling of cows, proper time of insemination, handling of semen, and placement of semen in the reproductive tract. Michael and Jim are now both fully trained A.I. technicians.

The underlying message throughout the week long session of herd management  is practicality and common sense. Continuing education is an investment in our herd. We strive for optimal healthy management for our herd to bring you the best cattle Austin Farm can offer.
