Wow, where did the Spring and Summer go? We've been busy for sure. Lots of hay has been put in the barn for winter feed. Mow, tetter, rake, bale around and around the fields we go. Lots of time and energy go into making really good feed. The cattle are out on pasture and loving the green grass and sunshine. Plenty of babies and moms out there to see if you drive by.
Ponies and being ridden, horse shows are taking place. Oxen are being worked and oxen pulling is going on at the local fairs. Four kids and their animals keep the farm humming all the time.
The corn maze has been cut. Oh how we got lost trying to get out. We hope you have better luck. The pumpkin plants are growing like crazy. Time to kick it into full gear and work on a few new items for some family fun. Hope to see you there.

Michael Austin ( herd manager ) and Jim Austin ( son) recently attended the Graham School for Cattlemen in Kanas. While at the Graham School they had the opportunity to have classroom and hands on involvement with herd management. During class time they discussed diagnosing pregnancy, artifical insemination, calf delivery and herd management.
Through open discussion they learned reproductive anatomy, locating the reproductive organs, stages of pregnancy and live animal evaluation. Progressing through the week with hands on clinics they were given information on nutritional cycling of cows, proper time of insemination, handling of semen, and placement of semen in the reproductive tract. Michael and Jim are now both fully trained A.I. technicians.
The underlying message throughout the week long session of herd management is practicality and common sense. Continuing education is an investment in our herd. We strive for optimal healthy management for our herd to bring you the best cattle Austin Farm can offer.
